Film Festival

History of the Festival

Since 1997 Gosfilmofond of Russia has been annually holding the festival of archive cinema “Belye Stolby”. For its entire locality, it has a specific character and has got a well-deserved reputation. The goal of “Belye Stolby” is cultural-elucidative activity, and its program is mainly composed of films from the big collection of Gosfilmofond. These films were practically never demonstrated neither in USSR nor in Russia and were unknown to domestic viewers, film historians, and critics, experts, researchers and Mass Media representatives. This festival found its niche in domestic demonstrations and according to rating in majority nominations it leads in the list of all the events conducted in our country.

The festival directivity has changed and modernized over years. Among the forgotten, unknown or taboo films, they started demonstrating films the way they were created by the authors and that were stocked and never admitted for technical and not for ideological reasons. In this way modern technologies and current skills of film-archivists made it possible to bring the author’s message up to the color film option, instead of well duplicated black and white one. And that was achieved not via commercialized colorization, world interest to which died long ago, but via the means of modern digitization of the raw material. One can and should say the same about domestic stereoscopic films made in late 1930th and after the war, but released for demonstration in their usual versions. Due to the efforts of film-archivists, people could watch these films at the latest festivals “Belye Stolby”, while these films were under-realized in its epoch. The general panorama of the festival is complemented by different kind of archive rarities, offered by the foreign cinema archives, with whom Gosfilmofond actively cooperates for years and Russian State film-archive of film-photo documents similar to Gosfilmofond code of domestic news films and documentation. The event is adorned by the seldom finds in personal cinematographic collections. The major worship and more often the primer demonstration at the festival is dedicated to films made on base of archive materials  — screen works having value of unique cinefilm saved during the barbaric times which ignored the cultural treasures. At the festivals of archive films with neither a star status nor film contest, the awards are given to the best TV programs with the cinema topics, meaningful persons and large-scale researchers in the field of cinema history, study of the film and film journalism, as well as international figures from film archiving.

After conducting 16 festivals, during the 2012 award ceremony of the Guild of film experts/critics, film experts of Gosfilmofond of Russia got the award “SLON”  in nomination «SINE CHARTA» for the first time. They are: V.Yu.Dmitriev (creative director), E.  M. Barykin, V.I. Bosenko, Yu.V.Belova, O. M. Bochkov, S. A. Bochkova, O.N.Derevyankina, S. N.Melentyeva, S.D.Pustyrskaya, N.A.Samoylova, T.V.Sergeeva, S.V.Skovorodnikova, A. V. Terentyeva, N.V.Yakovleva

for development of scientific concept and preparation of  the festival programs “Belye Stolby”.

“Kinopeocess” Magazine editorial office has conducted a survey of 50 mass media members evaluating the state of Russian and international (CIS countries) film festivals and Russian film contests, which were held from October 2011 to April 2012. According to the survey, Beliye Stolby Film Festival has earned first place ranking.

The principle it is participation in the creation of the biggest films of Soviet and Russian composers Shostakovich, Bogoslovsky, Schnittke, Artemyev, Frenkel Tsfasman, Krylatova, Pauls and others.
